Pretty neat. I realized we read words as symbols, but it's pretty amazing how easily we can compensate garbling. I wonder how well a spell checker would do reading this entry.

On a related perhaps even geekier note: one of the niggling little things that bugs me about GNOME and KDE is the default to display bright, chunky icons on common buttons (OK, Cancel, etc.) assuming it will help differentiate one from the other. Because we see words as symbols, the icons are redundant clutter.

I've always been bothered by the size of buttons too and even the icons on the desktop. At least in GNOME you can resize the icons. I'm glad there's usually the option of using the command line and 99% of the desktop environment is customizable. Do you use FluxBox or any of those minimal desktop environments? i cannot decide which one to go with. Just curious if you are near and dear to any.

I've only used it in nUbuntu and BackTrack, but Fluxbox seems pretty neat. I'll probably play with it a bit more when Fluxbuntu comes out.

I tried Xfce for a few months on an old Dell Dimension 3000 in the office. It's very ugly and nasty to work around, and I can't say I really noticed any significant performance benefits vs GNOME.

If you're comfortable in the command line, I'd definitely recomment Fluxbox over Xfce. Haven't tried any others, though.
